Perchloric acid, because of its strong oxidizing properties, is used in a wide range of chemical applications. When heated, it vaporizes and condenses to form metallic perchlorates on hood, duct and fan components of laboratory fume hoods. Perchloric acid vapors may form shock sensitive perchlorates in ventilation system ductwork. In addition to being highly corrosive, condensed vapors can react with hood gaskets, greaser and collected materials to form explosive perchloric salts.
